Endangered Species:
Common Name: Jaguar
Scientific Name: Panthera Onca
Why is the Jaguar endangered?
- The jaguar is endangered because it is being hunted at a rate that is higher than the one at which it reproduces. One of the main reasons that the Jaguar has become endangered is because of humans hunting them for sport. The jaguar is endangered due to deforestation, persecution also, many people have killed them for their furs. Fur trapping records show that in the 1960's there was an annual slaughter of no fewer then 15,000 jaguars in the Amazon alone.
Population Estimate: Some conservation biologists estimate the current jaguar population to be between 100,000 and 200,000. This estimate may seem like a lot, but it is only about half what it was in the 1960s.
